System of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The main principle of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) system focuses on the outcomes rather than how, when or where the learning occurred. It gives you credit for skills and knowledge acquired school, at work and at home, or through clubs, hobbies and other activities.

Through the RPL assessment, assessee could demonstrate that his/her working experience or prior knowledge has reached the level under qualification framework which is equivalent to a certain relevant academic level and can excel well in his/her career.

The Academy facilitates the progression of students through qualifications by giving credit for learning outcomes they already have achieved. Credit outcomes may allow for entry into a qualification and/or provide credit towards the qualification. Credit given may reduce the time required for a student to achieve the qualification.

This is underpinned by the Academy definition of credit as follows:

Credit is the value assigned for the recognition of equivalence in content and learning outcomes between different types of learning and/or qualifications. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to achieve a qualification and may be through credit transfer, articulation, recognition of prior learning or advanced standing.

Why RPL is Important?

RPL is important in many ways:

• It means that your previous work experience, knowledge and skills are formally recognised
• It prevents you having to undergo training or instruction in areas that you are already familiar with or competent in
• It can reduce the amount of time it takes you to secure a full qualification

Ways for Applying RPL

Ways for individuals to demonstrate that applicants have met the required outcomes and can be granted credit might include:

• Mapping of learning outcomes from prior formal or non-formal learning to the relevant qualification components
• Questioning (oral or written)
• Observation of performance in work based and/or simulated environments
• Examinations/assessments
• Consideration of third party reports and/or other documentation such as articles, reports, project material, papers, testimonials or other products prepared by the RPL applicant that relate to the learning outcomes of the relevant qualification component
• Consideration of a portfolio and review of contents
  
• Participation in structured assessment activities that individuals normally would be required to undertake if they were enrolled in the qualification components

The Benefits of RPL

RPL is useful to everyone including employers, course providers and applicants. The benefits of RPL include:

• RPL facilitates access for ‘non-traditional’ students – people who may not have had the opportunity to do further study
• Acknowledges value of learning outside a formal setting, e.g. values and recognises learning in the workplace
• Validates the worth of learning students have achieved by themselves
• Enables students to progress to other education and training programmes
• Eliminates unnecessary repetition and duplication of material already familiar to the student.
• Shortens the time necessary to earn a qualification – this motivates students who might otherwise be discouraged by the length of time required to complete a college level course or a particular programme of study
• Enhances students’ pride and self-esteem for what they have accomplished as learners
• Enhances students’ perception and understanding of learning as a lifelong process
• Fast tracking workers through the skills recognition process
• Reduction in costs of training
• Reduction in down-time while workers are in training
• Efficient identification of ‘skills gaps’ allowing for more focused training

1. Press "Attempt for Assessment" under relevant assessment level to start

    your RPL assessment

2. Enter the access code given by the Academy

3. Enter your (1) Full Name, (2) Country, (3) Email Address, (4) ID/Passport No.

    and (5) Qualification Title

4. Start answering the questions

5. Press "Submit Your Assessment" when completed the assessment
